Best Practice Competition

Every year,  Green Key International runs a best practice competition among its awarded sites to find the Sustainability Champion of the year. Each Best Practice Competition focuses on a certain topic related to sustainability in tourism. An international jury composed of members of the International Steering Comittee as well as external tourism experts decide on the winners. 

BEST PRACTICE winner 2018

The topic of the third Green Key best practice competition was Informing and Engaging Guests in Sustainability. The theme relates to SDG 12 “responsible consumption and production” to ensure “sustainable consumption and production patterns".


The winner of the best practice competition 2018 is the restaurant ‘A Cozinha por António Loureiro ‘ which has plenty of initiates that engage guests in sustainable cooking and food waste reduction.

Best Practice Winner 2017

2017 has been designated as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development by the UN to "support a change in policies, business practices and consumer behavior towards a more sustainable tourism sector that can contribute effectively to the Sustainable Development Goals". Therefore, Green Key decided to run the best practice competition under the topic partnership and local engagement for sustainable development.

The winner of the best practice competition is for the second time Kasteelhoeve Wange in Belgium. The establishment proved to be a leader in sustainable local development by both having strong cooperation with local stakeholders and contributing to the local social and natural environment.

Best Practice Winner 2016

The topic of Green Key's first best practice competition was Water Management.


Winner of the best practice competition 2016 was Kasteelhoeve Wange in Belgium. The guesthouse and meeting location convinced the international jury with its integrated water management solution with good potential for adaption by others.
